Songfacts®:

  • "Heartbreaker" is the 12th track on Noah Gundersen's sophomore album, Carry the Ghost. A shorter acoustic version of the song is on the deluxe version of his first record, Ledges, and also the Twenty-Something EP that was sold exclusively at concerts.

The seven-minute full-band recording that appears on Carry the Ghost was inspired by the Neil Young classic, "Cortez the Killer," and also a song by the Philadelphia band, Strand of Oaks.
  • When we spoke with Gundersen, he explained the raw process of getting to the final product of the tune. "We just wanted to play a really loud song, so everything was recorded live on that song for the most part," he said. "All the drums, bass, and guitars were all done in the same room. All of us playing together without a click [track]."
  • Talking about the meaning of this song, Gunderson told us: "It's lyrically a song that's expressing the loneliness of being on the road but not wanting to be tied down by anything. It's that struggle and that dichotomy. It's then feeling like a womanizer, and just struggling with the expressions of your sexuality."
