Lorelei

Album: This Year Of Grace! (1928)

Songfacts®:

  • This is neither the first nor the last song called "Lorelei," and although it has a certain charm it is far from the best. It was introduced by Adrienne Brune and Sonnie Hale in the first act of This Year Of Grace!, which Coward said was "the best of all my revues."

It remains to be seen how the couplet "What could be more obscene than vamping a submarine?" dovetails with this.
  • Coward recorded the song himself, accompanied by Carroll Gibbons on piano; the digital remastered 1999 recording runs to 3:05. Rock fans will of course prefer the Wishbone Ash song of the same name, while classical buffs will prefer the original Heine/Silcher composition. >>>
