Songfacts®:

  • The song was inspired by the Kinks' 1968 collection of thematic vignettes of English town and hamlet life, The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Gallagher commented to the NME: "Very Kinks sounding; the opening line about the village green is a clue as to where it all came from. I was listening to that album a lot on the last Oasis tour."
  • Gallagher explained the song's lyrical content to the NME: "The title itself, people are gonna think, 'What the f---ing hell's this going to be about? Each line is like the scene of a film, it's really visual. In my head, it reminds me of that scene in The Deer Hunter where the guy gets back from Vietnam, and the girl puts on the record on the jukebox in the bar."
