Songfacts®:

  • When she was a member of the group Labelle, Nona Hendryx wrote many of their songs. She later sang with Talking Heads and recorded as a solo artist. On this song, she takes on the famous conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh, who she accuses of spewing hate over the airwaves. Hendryx wrote the song after hearing Limbaugh's comments on the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Limbaugh accused President Obama of pandering to minorities and using the tragedy for political gain in his relief efforts. When we spoke with Hendryx in 2012, she explained why she wrote it. "I had to," she said. "Because there was no more room on my chest for him. I just had to do that because it made no sense for me to keep complaining to my friends and complaining to other people. When I can get it into musical form and get that out there, that helps." (Here's our full interview with Nona Hendryx.)
