Songfacts®:

  • This 45-second ditty is a son's light-hearted tribute to his "hero" father, who gave him the courage to spread his "newborn wings, like mayonnaise and marmalade and other spreadable things." NRBQ wrote this for The Simpsons' episode, "Take My Wife, Sleaze," which aired in November 1999. The song plays while Bart is teaching Homer how to ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle that he won in a dance contest. Look closely and you will catch NRBQ briefly cameo in this episode – they are the band playing in Poppa Wheelie's Bar. They also perform The Simpsons' theme tune over the closing credits. Television producer and self-confessed NRBQ nut, Mike Scully, frequently featured the band's music on The Simpsons between 1997 and 2001, when he served as head writer.
