Songfacts®:

  • The riff is a direct copy of T-Rex's "Bang A Gong (Get It On)." Noel Gallagher made no secret of the fact that he was "borrowing" guitar riffs from other artists' songs past and present and said that he has no problem with other bands doing the same with Oasis songs. >>>

  • Rod Stewart made a cover of this song that he included on his 1998 album When We Were the New Boys. >>>

  • When this entered the UK Top 75 for a tenth time in December 1996, it broke the record for Most Chart Entries. The previous record holder had been Frank Sinatra's "My Way," whose 1969 release had nine separate chart runs in the UK.
  • Co-producer Owen Morris also mixed Definitely Maybe. He recalled to Q magazine in 2011: "I mastered the album at Johnny Marr's studio. (Marr) was appalled by how in-your-face the whole thing was. He thought I was an idiot for what he perceived were mistakes - like the noise at the start of Cigarettes and Alcohol."
  • Noel Gallagher told Q there was a theme running through Definitely Maybe: "'Let's Have it' was the main ethos. All the songs were about leaving Manchester and ending up in the sunshine, taking drugs and drinking for the rest of your life. 'Rock 'n' Roll Star,' 'Live Forever,' Cigarettes and Alcohol. It's all about escapism - a pint in one hand, your best mate in the other, and just having a good time."

Alcohol, ciggies, drugs, women whatever this song not only gets me geared for a night out but if there was one song that represents nightlife around here and anywhere in England for that matter, it's this song.
