Songfacts®:

  • This fragile piano track is possibly the most intimate song Of Monsters and Men has ever written:

I cough up my lungs, 'cause they remind me how it all went wrong
But I leave in my heart, cause I don't want to stay in the dark

Co-singer-guitarist Raggi Thorhallsson told Billboard magazine: "Last time around, [the band members] were really good friends but getting to know each other - now we really know each other very well. For us to open up to each other and talk about things that are personal was definitely hard, but I think it also makes us write better lyrics if we're honest."
  • The track's slow tempo didn't come naturally for the five-piece Of Monsters and Man, especially when its touring band expands to nine. "We have this energy when we're all together where we always want to take it all the way," lead vocalist Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir told Rolling Stone. "But I'm a big sucker for the quiet moments. We had to contain ourselves with 'Organs.' It was like, 'Let's bring it up!' And I was like, 'No, no, no. Chill out!"
