Songfacts®:

  • Here, Offset contemplates his rise from the streets of Atlanta to doing shows in Mobile, Alabama and eventually selling out arenas and doing tours.

I'm from the south, had a gold grill
    Remember doin' shows in Mobile
Go against me and it's roadkill
Wakin' up to see the sunrise
I turned five, I got baptized
We was livin' up in College Park
    Midnight, heard the gunfight
    Playin' football at Forest Park
Gresham Park where your moment get defined
    The story of my life

Offset explained to Billboard that there are plenty of people from his past who ask him, "Damn bro, how'd you do that?" So he set out to answer their question by making a relatable song in which he talks about "certain different topics that people might have not known, like how I was baptized and how I've been a man of God my whole life."

The Migos rapper added: "I was at home one time, looking at my cars, my houses and all the things I've got from where I came from and I was just like, 'Damn.' So that's why I made the song."
  • The song features a verse from J. Cole, who also talks about his rise to fame from difficult circumstances. The Dreamville rapper previously referenced his humble upbringing on the Born Sinner track "LAnd of the Snakes."
  • "How Did I Get Here" marks J. Cole's first collaboration with Offset or any other member of Migos. He did previously step into the world of Southern trap when he guested on 21 Savage's "A Lot."
