Songfacts®:

  • Ketch Secor sings about the complicated emotions of homecoming as he describes arriving back home from tour, long after his wife and children have gone to bed. He explained to Uncut:

"I wrote it because of something these Army Rangers told me once. They had a two-week furlough and could go anywhere in the world. They decided to catch a flight out of Kandahar and head to Burlington, Vermont to hear us play live. I asked them why suicide is the number-one course of death among Gis in Afghanistan. They got sorrowful and looked away and then they said, 'it's not the fighting or the killing or the dying. It's the lonesome.'"
