Songfacts®:

  • "Can't Break Up Now" is a duet between Old Dominion lead singer Matthew Ramsey and singer-songwriter Megan Moroney about a couple in the throes of a rough patch.
  • So what am I supposed to
    Unlisten to every song written
Take you out of every melody
You know my secrets, my demons and I know your weaknesses
All of your doubts and your dreams
    So we
    Can't break up now

Ramsey and Moroney aren't blind to the cracks in their relationship; in fact, they see them all too well. But walking away? That's not easy, not when they've invested so much heart and soul in their union. Ramsey knows the exact blend of coffee that makes her morning, and Moroney's closet is a testament to the T-shirts he's gifted her. They've built a world together, sharing the same friends, even winning over Ramsey's dog in the process.
  • Matthew Ramsey co-wrote the song with Old Dominion guitarist and keyboardist Trevor Rosen, Emily Weisband (Camila Cabello's "Consequences," Hillary Scott & The Scott Family's "Thy Will") and Tofer Brown (Jon Pardi's "Night Shift," Little Big Town's "Wine, Beer, Whiskey ").
  • Though Moroney didn't contribute to the song, Old Dominion admire her for her sharp songwriter's perspective. "Megan's a really intuitive singer, but she's also a very smart songwriter - and she came at this song from what was being said, how the melody rises, and kind of blew our minds!" Ramsey raved. "I think we all loved the way she creates a song, her sense of how notes flow, but she's both songwriter/singer who came in and pushed this song to almost a scene in a movie."
  • Old Dominion recorded the song for their fifth studio album, Memory Lane. They released it as a single on August 18, 2023.
  • Old Dominion produced the track with Ross Copperman. This is Nashville songwriter/producer Copperman's first production for Old Dominion, but he previously co-wrote the band's tracks "Be With Me" and "Paint the Grass Green."
