Songfacts®:

  • A very personal song that Adams wrote herself, she talked about it in I Got Thunder: Black Women Songwriters and Their Craft: "This song had to deal with making up my mind about which marriage I was going to commit to. I actually tried to really feel something for this other guy, the one who was good on paper. We tried and it just did not work. But the other one that I had been running from for years - because some folks thought he just was not worthy - that's the one that I really wanted. And in the end my heart just wouldn't lie. I love that song because writing it helped me to decide that I was going to follow my heart because the heart don't lie."
