Songfacts®:

  • Adams wrote this song after reading a newspaper article about a teenage black girl who had leukemia. She told LaShonda Barnett in I Got Thunder: Black Women Songwriters and Their Craft: "The bone marrow bank for black people is miniscule compared to other banks because it just isn't promoted or ever really discussed in our communities. Plus, it's a major operation to take the marrow from the bone and it's a very painful procedure to donate bone marrow. Anyway, the young cancer patient used to draw pictures of what was going on outside of her hospital window and one of the pictures she drew was of a tree bearing few leaves because it was winter. The nurses called the picture 'The Window of Hope.' When I read this in the newspaper I was inspired to write the song. Years later I met the young girl's parents at a convention. Unfortunately, she died, but her parents were so appreciative of the song."
