Songfacts®:

  • "It Isn't Perfect But It Might Be" arrived on February 14, 2025, like a musical Valentine. It's the lead track and the end credits song for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy - the fourth installment of the romantic comedy franchise. Written and recorded by Olivia Dean specifically for the film, it goes with the movie's theme of finding hope and happiness after life's unceremonious plot twists.
  • The film follows Bridget as she stumbles through life as a widow and single mother, four years after the death of the beloved Mark Darcy. If Bridget has taught us anything over the years, it's that life is a series of both awkward missteps and serendipitous moments - always imperfect, but always, somehow, worth living. And "It Isn't Perfect But It Might Be" captures this, echoing Bridget's journey toward healing, embracing life's messiness, and being willing to love again.
  • Dean described the song as a reflection on the tentative hope that life, even after it's taken unexpected turns, can still offer something meaningful. "It's about giving yourself permission to love again after grief," she explained, "and trusting that things might just work out after all, even if it's not how you expected them to."

And really, isn't that the essence of Bridget?
  • Dean wrote the song alongside Bastian Langebæk and Max Wolfgang. Langebæk is a Danish songwriter who has also worked with Jessie Ware and Jess Glynne; Wolfgang is the former frontman of the symphonic rock band Wolf Gang. The pair previously co-wrote three songs for Dean's 2024 Messy album.

Dean's longtime collaborator Matt Hales produced the track alongside Zach Nahome, a producer known for his work with artists like PinkPantheress and Maverick Sabre.
  • Directed by Jake Erland, the live performance video features Dean, accompanied by her band, playing the song at RAK Studios in North London.
