Songfacts®:

  • "Man I Need" is a love song built on direct communication and emotional clarity rather than hesitation. Its rhythm pushes the track forward while Olivia Dean's smooth, soulful voice conveys both warmth and a clear-cut sense of purpose.

"'Man I Need' is a song about knowing how you deserve to be loved and not being afraid to ask for it," said Dean. "It's forward, sexy, fun! It's made for dancing!"
  • The song was released as the third single from Dean's second album, The Art of Loving. Dean worked closely with Zach Nahome as her primary producer and collaborator on the album, including on "Man I Need." Nahome is known for his work with artists like PinkPantheress and Maverick Sabre.
  • Tobias Jesso Jr., the Canadian singer-songwriter and producer, helped Dean write the track and also contributed background vocals. Jesso Jr. also has credits with the likes of Adele ("When We Were Young"), Dua Lipa ("Houdini") and Justin Bieber ("Daisies").
  • The video, directed by Jake Erland, stages Dean in a sort of carousel of seven suitors, each angling for her attention, visualizing the song's themes of knowing one's worth and being selective in love. The video used the same creative team behind Dean's previous The Art Of Loving singles, "Nice To Each Other" and "Dive."
  • When Olivia Dean walked into her East London studio in early 2025 for a session with Zach Nahome and Tobias Jesso Jr., her mission was to write something she could dance to. Dean had spent most of 2024 touring her debut album, Messy, playing lush, soulful ballads for growing audiences across the UK and Europe. But as she looked ahead to more tour dates in 2025, she realized her set needed an injection of tempo, a track that would lift the room and keep people moving.

"We started with the 6/8 groove," Dean recalled to Billboard. "I had a crush at the time. I was like, 'Listen: talk to me!' That initial joy when you first fancy somebody. I just wanted to channel that essence into a song."

The result was "Man I Need."
  • "Man I Need" wasn't originally earmarked as a pre-release track. "Honestly, it wasn't supposed to be a single," said Dean. "When I got to play it with my band in rehearsals, they were like, 'This should be a single.' And I was like, 'You know what? Yeah! This one is fun!'"
  • The Art of Loving was inspired by an art exhibition in Los Angeles called "All About Love" by Mickalene Thomas, which itself was a response to bell hooks' 1999 book All About Love. When Dean visited the exhibition in 2024, it changed how she thought about romance. The Brit explained to Today that she doesn't see love as a fairytale anymore but as "something you can practice, like a skill you can get really good at." Dean was stirred to create an album reflecting on her new understanding of love, drawing on themes from the book and exhibition.
  • When "Man I Need" climbed to the top of the UK Official Singles Chart during the week of October 5, 2025, Olivia Dean became the first British female solo artist since Adele in 2021 to simultaneously hold the #1 positions on both the UK Albums Chart (with The Art of Loving) and the Singles Chart.
  • This was the first of two songs that Olivia Dean performed during her debut appearance on Saturday Night Live on November 15, 2025. She sang it in front of a shimmering gold backdrop, backed by a full band.
