Songfacts®:

  • Do I love him more than he loves me? This is the question Olivia Newton-John tortures herself with in this country-flavored pop ballad. The single, written by John Rostill of the British rock-and-roll band The Shadows, was her second Top 10 hit in the US, after "Let Me Be There." Fellow Shadows John Farrar and Bruce Welch produced the album, the first of many helmed by Farrar, who would go on to pen several of Olivia's hits.
  • A month before the single was released, Olivia took home the Grammy award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for "Let Me Be There." Country purists were outraged that an English-born Aussie pop singer could win the prize over contenders like Tammy Wynette and Dottie West. Another insult: "If You Love Me, Let Me Know," a #2 country hit, was nominated for Single of the Year at Nashville's own Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. It lost, but Olivia won Female Vocalist of the Year over Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Tanya Tucker. That was the last straw. Some members of the CMA, including George Jones, left in protest to form the Association of Country Entertainers. Olivia, undeterred, continued to notch several hits in country's Top 10 over the next couple years.
