• Don't be fooled by the title: this is certainly not a love song. It's about looking back on a relationship and wondering what you saw in that person in the first place. Despite being innovators in electronic music, OMD has a knack for expressing the very human feelings that come with love and loss. In our interview with lead singer Andy McCluskey, he explained: "After a while, we became aware that our sound was actually created by the tension between the machines and the humans. The architecture and the morality. We never wanted to be robot impersonators. There was no point to that."
• This was the first OMD song to crack the American market. In their native UK, it was their 10th Top 40 hit, but synth-pop songs didn't go over well in the States unless they got played on MTV, and OMD were never video stars. The big breakthrough for the group in America was "If You Leave," which was featured in the movie Pretty in Pink. McCluskey told us: "To many Americans, we are a one hit wonder, even though we had several other hits. Nothing as big as 'If You Leave.' It's a blessing to have such a big hit, but a shame that it overshadows so many other good songs for the US audience."
