Songfacts®:

  • This Dr. Luke-produced track has mid-tempo verses in which the boys recount a lost love from "summer '09." The chorus is a different creature entirely with a stomp that has been compared to Queen's signature hit, "We Will Rock You." The American producer told MTV News: "It's a song that some of my writers came up with. I heard it and I loved it. One of my producers, Kojak, and Peter Svensson and Sam Hollander wrote this song, and I was like, 'Wow, this is so good.' I'm pleased to be a part of it. It's nice when you hear music and you immediately like it."
  • One Direction's vocals were recorded in England for Dr. Luke by one of his producer/songwriters, Emily Wright.
  • Zayn Malik switched the lyrics of this song to "F--k Me" during a performance in Sydney, Australia.
  • The first version of this song was written by Peter Svensson and Sam Hollander, who pitched it One Direction - a longshot because so many writers were sending them songs. Surprisingly, it worked, but Hollander, who had made a name for himself working with pop-punk bands like Good Charlotte and We The Kings, quickly learned that the success rate for pitching songs is very low. After a string of rejections, he started working directly with with artists, reviving his career with tracks for the likes of Fitz and the Tantrums
("HandClap") and Panic! at the Disco ("High Hopes").
