Songfacts®:

  • Owl John was a solo musical project by the late Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit, alongside his Frightened Rabbit bandmate Andy Monaghan and the Scottish group's touring guitarist Simon Liddell. This song is from their sole self-titled album.
  • The Owl John album was suggested by Atlantic as a means of revitalizing Hutchinson following an exhausting Frightened Rabbit tour. The three decamped to an old studio on the Isle of Mull, where there was no pressure or expectations from the label; Atlantic basically paid for Hutchinson to musically indulge himself for a fortnight. The resulting album, which was released on August 4, 2014, peaked at #99 on the UK albums chart.
  • Liddell told NME that "Los Angeles Be Kind" originated from "what was a grainy little recording" on Hutchinson's phone. He added: "Scott had a vision for the track and we helped him build it."
  • Coldplay interpolated the song for their 2019 track "Champion Of The World."
