Songfacts®:

  • Passion Pit vocalist Michael Angelakos has bipolar disorder. Around the period of the band's second album, Gosammer, his mental illness became hard to control. However by the time he was writing the songs for Kindred, Angelakos was feeling better, and his wife is a big part of the reason why. In gratitude, the Passion Pit frontman penned this hands-toward-the-sky anthem for her. "'Lifted Up' is a song about my wife just coming to me at a point in my life where I really was pretty lost," he told NPR. "I was pretty dark. She's been one of the most amazing people, as a friend, as a partner in life."
  • Thankfulness is a theme that runs through Kindred. "This record is about gratitude," Angelakos told HMV.com. "It's about people, the people who help you and love you. A lot of the last couple of years has been about family for me and finding a new family in my friends."
