Songfacts®:

  • "You Don't Seem to Miss Me" was written by the prolific songwriter Jim Lauderdale, who has composed songs for George Strait, Jack Ingram, The Chicks and many others. In a Songfacts interview with Lauderdale, he said: "I wrote it out in the desert in a place called Pioneertown up in Yucca Valley, California, out near Joshua Tree. And it's a place where I really enjoy writing. That one was kind of a quick one, one time. Melodies will kind of come to me at odd times or at places, it could be anywhere. But it's nice to have an environment you feel comfortable in."
  • In this song, Patty Loveless laments how her relationship with her man has changed. They were once so in love with each other, but now when she returns home after a trip away, he seems not to have missed her.
  • Jim Lauderdale originally planned on recording the song himself. That was until he played it to Patty Loveless and her producer-husband Emery Gordy Jr. during a meeting with songwriters.
  • The song features George Jones in the background. Their partnership on "You Don't Seem to Miss Me" won them the 1998 Country Music Association Award for Musical Event of the Year.
  • Released on September 20, 1997 as the first single from Loveless' album Long Stretch of Lonesome, "You Don't Seem to Miss Me" reached #14 on the Country chart.
  • Josh Turner recorded the song for his 2020 Country State of Mind album. His version is a duet with female country group Runaway June.
