Songfacts®:

  • "Hand in Hand" finds Paul McCartney walking through life with his beloved wife Nancy on his arm. The song came to him late at night when he was tinkering on his father's old piano at home. Macca came up with some chords which became the beginning of the track.
  • McCartney explained to The Sun that "Hand in Hand" is basically a love song. "As I wrote it, I was imagining me and Nancy about to go through life hand in hand," he said. "It was written in the early stages of our relationship."

"There are millions of people in that situation," he added: "They've got someone they love and they want to go through life hand in hand, to be a partnership."
  • Two female cellists contributed towards "Hand in Hand." One of them told McCartney: "I'm getting married for the second time and I'm a little bit nervous. But this song has made me think it's going to work out all right."

The former Beatle thought this was "a perfect reason for writing the song."
