Songfacts®:

  • Paul Weller sings here about the difficulty of letting things go.

Just like a soldier from the past
Who won't be told it's over yet
Refusing to put down his gun
    He's gotta hurt someone
He'll keep on fighting 'til his war is won

Weller explained to Mojo: "Anything that bugs you or whatever, just let it go. Today's a new day. Start again. Start afresh. It was along those lines really."
  • Despite being one of Paul Weller's bigger hit singles he rarely plays it live. He explained: "We only ever played that song once correctly and that was on that record. We tried playing it live and it was never any good and I don't know why that was. It was just a moment and a mood. I was wracked with self-doubt, which is mentioned in quite a few of the songs then. But that kind of went as soon as I felt I was getting back on the track."
