  • Here, Paul Weller takes a swipe at materialism.

The more we get, the more we lose
When all is "more," it's more we choose

Weller explained to Mojo magazine that his warning against acquisitiveness is aimed not just at societies generally. "More stuff doesn't make people happy," he noted. "Sadly it's kind of a comment on me and my family and all. We lead a very privileged, very lucky lifestyle and it doesn't always make the people around me happy."
  • The two lines of French are courtesy of Julie Gros of Le SuperHomard. They translate as:

Do we have to go all the way?
    Even if I control everything?

Asked by Rolling Stone about the significance of the French lyrics, Weller replied: "When I did my vocal I was thinking it would be great if we could have a few lines of the song in French. I have no idea why I thought that. I thought it would sound musically good. There was no other significance."
  • This features electric and acoustic guitar by Josh McClorey of Irish rockers The Strypes.
  • Paul Weller and co-producer Stan Kybert built this seven-minute epic from the Modfather's basic demo. "It all started with a little guitar riff on his phone," Kybert told Uncut magazine, "which survived the entire process, so on the finished version it's still in there."
