Songfacts®:

  • Amen Corner's Andy Fairweather Low trades lines with Paul Weller on this funk-laced cut. It finds the two indulging in some Superfly strutting as they "testify" to their love of soul and gospel.
  • Weller told Uncut magazine he'd initially tried to write something with American funk and soul singer Betty Davis, but it didn't work out. He still loved the groove of the backing track but couldn't get to grips with the song.

Weller had met Andy Fairweather Low a few times, and in January 2020 they did a charity show in Guildford where they sang some Stax songs. Weller thought their voices sounded good together, so he sent Fairweather Low this tune's backing track. The ex-Amen Corner singer sent back a demo of his ideas, then, once lockdown lifted, he drove to Weller's Black Barn studios and did his vocals in a couple of hours.
  • Weller recorded the track for his 16th solo album, Fat Pop (Volume 1). He started laying down vocals and guitar for his record on his own while quarantining, before sending the material to his core band members - guitarist Steve Cradock, bassist Andy Crofts and drummer Ben Gordelier - who fleshed out the tracks.

Once COVID restrictions were eased, Weller reunited with his band at Black Barn to complete the album. They cut this song live when Andy Fairweather Low came down to the studio. Jacko Peake, who worked with Weller in the early '90s, added flute, soprano saxophone, and tenor saxophone.
