Smith told Songfacts the story behind the song in a 2021 interview: "I always had that title on my phone and I've loved how people have turned the saying 'I'm fine' into a saying that says you're not really fine. I thought it was extremely relatable and was thankful my co-writers saw the same vision. The song really tells a story as well. I love how sarcastic it is. Like if you ran into an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend out on the town somewhere and what I think you would say to them if you weren't really over that relationship."
