Songfacts®:

  • Never believe anybody when they say "I'm fine" - especially someone who's nursing a broken heart. Country singer Payton Smith is trying to convince his ex (and himself) that he's not lonely without her by uttering the title phrase. Smith told Songfacts the story behind the song in a 2021 interview: "I always had that title on my phone and I've loved how people have turned the saying 'I'm fine' into a saying that says you're not really fine. I thought it was extremely relatable and was thankful my co-writers saw the same vision. The song really tells a story as well. I love how sarcastic it is. Like if you ran into an ex-girlfriend/boyfriend out on the town somewhere and what I think you would say to them if you weren't really over that relationship."
  • Smith wrote this with Ronnie Bowman, a bluegrass musician who also co-wrote Smith's single, "Like I Knew You Would."
