Songfacts®:

  • This song was written about the difficulties of being a man in the modern world. Lead singer Harry Koisser told NME he wrote it, "in a tiny converted office unit above a weird clothing factory in Hackney (London)."

He added: "It started as a loud demo that I couldn't sing over, then it became a song about masculinity and how those things define some people I've met."
  • After the release date for Happy People was pushed back to February 9, 2015, Peace decamped to Rockfield Studios in Wales to record three new songs: this track, "Perfect Skin" and "Someday." "It was a win-win situation," drummer Dom Boyce told NME. "We either went away and had a laugh or we went away and had a laugh and made some songs. And we made a comical video (for "World Pleasure") as well."
  • Koisser told NME how he began thinking about gender stereotypes after he found himself unable to identify with modern lad culture. "Once, I was waiting for someone on Digbeth High Street, wearing a fur coat," he recalled. "Two Irish guys came up to me and were like, 'You're a queer, come here and let me kick you in your balls.' So many things you can tell me to come here for and I will, but not that."

Koisser added: "I think 'I'm A Girl' is a bit regressive, though - I think I was thinking how I used to feel. Now I've just learnt to live with it."
