Songfacts®:

  • As shown on the DVD Single Video Theory, guitarist Stone Gossard brought the guitar riff for the song to the band after recording it on a microcassette recorder. He called it "Morning Song," but it became "In Hiding" after Eddie Vedder added the lyrics.
  • The song's lyrics were inspired by the writings of Charles Bukowski. The reclusive writer was known to stay in a room for days at a time without coming out.
  • The album's liner notes features the quote "The first human face you see will knock you back 50%" by Charles Bukowski attributed to "Buk" in place of the lyrics for the song. >>>

  • "In Hiding" is part of Pearl Jam's fifth album, Yield. They played it live, along with five other songs from the album, on their Monkeywrench Radio satellite broadcast January 31, 1998, a few days before the album was released. Pearl Jam would do these broadcasts from time to time, which many radio stations simulcast. After the band played, other bands would perform (in this case, Mudhoney and Stone Gossard's band Brad) and Eddie Vedder would do a DJ set.

  • Zach from Tallahassee, FlThis is by far one of the best songs they have ever wrote. I know it doesn't matter, but I wish this song got more attention in the mainstream. Instead it only reached 13 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks and quickly dissappeared from radio.
  • James from New Market, InPearl Jam frequently wrote songs about influential individuals..."Sweet Lew", "04/20/02", "Man of the Hour", "Alive"...
  • Dylan from New Britain, CtIll swallow my words just to keep from lying is one of my favorite lyrics ever
