  • "Wreckage" is an acoustic-leaning track that tackles the turbulent landscape of American politics. Frontman Eddie Vedder delivers impassioned lyrics urging unity amid the divisive aftermath of former US President Donald Trump's claims about the 2020 election.
  • Vedder's inspiration for the song stemmed from a discussion about Trump as he observed the former president's relentless refusal to accept defeat.

"There is a guy in the United States who is still saying he didn't lose an election, and people are reverberating and amplifying that message as if it is true," he told the London Sunday Times. "Trump is desperate. I don't think there has ever been a candidate more desperate to win, just to keep himself out of prison and to avoid bankruptcy. It is all on the line, and he's out there playing the victim - at least they're doing this to me, because if not they would be doing it to you - but you haven't falsified your tax records. You don't have classified information in your basement. So the song is saying, let's not be driven apart by one person, especially not a person without any worthy causes."
  • This isn't the first time Vedder has used his platform to critique Trump. On Pearl Jam's 2020 album Gigaton, the track "Quick Escape" offers a scathing commentary on the state of the planet under Trump's leadership, highlighting the environmental devastation caused by the climate change-denying president.
  • Pearl Jam released "Wreckage" as the third single from Dark Matter. After cranking things up to 11 with the first two fists-pumping singles, "Dark Matter" and "Running," Pearl Jam take a detour on "Wreckage." The track ditches the breakneck tempos, ear-splitting guitars, and Eddie Vedder's signature bellow for a more contemplative approach.
  • Eddie Vedder and producer Andrew Watt built the track's foundation. "That one probably has the biggest build for me personally, in terms of hearing it at first and thinking, it's kind of an Ed song, guitarist Stone Gossard told Spin. "I wasn't quite aware of its potency until later. Andrew encouraged me to play this little harmonic, acoustic part almost like a Cure melody."

Watt added: "['Wreckage'] started with the riff and everyone kind of formulating sections together. That song just came to Ed right away. Within the first couple takes before the music was even right, his vocals were right. His melodies and words are so strong in that song. Once the initial spark was there and there were a few sections, it was just really about following him."
  • "Wreckage" climbed to the top of Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart dated August 10, 2024. It was Pearl Jam's third #1 on the tally, following "Just Breathe" in 2010 and "Sirens" in 2013.
