Songfacts®:

  • In the first original track written by the a cappella group Pentatonix, the group is searching for some deep "can't sleep love" in contrast to the frivolous relationships full of "kissin' in the moonlight, movies on a late night." PTX wrote and produced the album's lead single with the help of songwriters Elof Loelv, Kevin Figueiredo, Teddy Peña and William Wells. It was also the first time the band worked with Kuk Harrell, a notable songwriter and producer who penned hits like "Umbrella" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" as part of a songwriting team with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The Dream" Nash, and also produced songs for American Idol.

PTX baritone Scott Hoying recalled in a track-by-track commentary: "'Can't Sleep Love' was a song that was originally sent to us by the label unfinished, and we were obsessed with it, and we were in Europe and we started arranging it and it just worked, because it sounded very full but it was still like very, very vocal. And so like this is the perfect song for us."
  • A second version was released featuring Timbaland protégée Tink. The group's tenor, Mitch Grassi, and baritone, Scott Hoying, are both fans of the rapper and asked the label to to reach out to her management.
  • The Pentatonix album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It was the first-ever release by an a cappella group to do so.
