Songfacts®:

  • "Tears" is a breakup anthem with a twist. Perrie sings about moving on from a past relationship and feeling empowered in the process. Though the way he left her once caused her pain, Perrie promises he won't see her cry again.
  • Speaking to Capital Breakfast, Perrie described the song as boasting a "towny, sunshiney, feel good vibe." This upbeat production reflects Perrie's newfound strength and optimism. Perrie herself describes the song as reaching a point "where you feel empowered, and you leave the tears behind because you've come out the other side."
  • "Tears" was written by Feli Ferraro (known for working with BTS and the Jonas Brothers) and produced by Ido Zmishlany (who has credits with Tate McRae and Sabrina Carpenter). This collaboration happened during a writing camp in LA shortly after Little Mix' hiatus began in 2022.

At the time, Perrie was unsure of her solo sound and identity as an artist, but when the head of her label sent her "Tears," she loved the "nostalgic and old school" vibe, a feeling that resonated with her. Inspired by this discovery, Perrie returned to London to write more songs for her debut solo album.
  • Perrie premiered "Tears" on June 16, 2024, at Capital FM's Summertime Ball. She released it as her second solo single, following "Forget About Us" five days later.
