Songfacts®:

  • An us-against-the-world song, "All Night Long" finds Peter Murphy singing about getting ready for a long journey with someone who comforts his soul. That person could be his wife, Beyhan Faulkes, whom he married in 1982, but it could also be someone or something completely different, as his lyrics are not literal and often written to explore his subconscious longings.
  • Murphy wrote this song with Paul Statham, a member of his backing band The Hundred Men. That band name comes from a line in this song:

    No hundred men now
    Would dare cut into us
  • The French part that comes in around the 2:30 mark comes from the 1946 Jean Cocteau film La Belle et la Bête (Beauty and the Beast). The translation:

    Beauty
A rose that played its role
My mirror, my key of gold, my horse, and my glove
Are the five secrets of my power
If you put this glove on your right hand
It will take you where you want to be
  • Oh your seesaw smile
    Lasts me all night long

Murphy likes this seesaw image: his 2011 album Ninth contains a track called "Seesaw Sway."
