Songfacts®:

  • "Day Is Done" is a message to a child, letting him know that his father will be there to help him through troubled times.

In a Songfacts interview with Peter Yarrow, who wrote the song, he explained: "It was written at the height of the anti-war movement, and really, I was thinking about my brother, and the possibility of his being drafted. My younger brother. I wrote it from that perspective."
  • The song first appeared on the Peter, Paul and Mary album of children's songs, Peter, Paul and Mommy. The trio often included songs for kids on their albums, famously "Puff The Magic Dragon."
