Songfacts®:

  • In this soft rock ballad, a lonely Phil Collins pleads with his lover to give him just one more night to prove his devotion (we're not sure how, but it sounds like he has a plan). It was his second #1 single in the US, the first being "Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)."
  • Being a drummer at heart, it's not surprising that Collins started this song on a drum machine. He explained to Playboy that he was playing around with the machine when inspiration hit: "I had a tempo in mind. I was thinking of one of the Jacksons' songs actually when I strung a chorus on it. The line 'one more night' just fit what I was playing. The rest of the song was written very quickly."
  • Collins isn't trying to be a downer and says the lyrics "are more optimistic in a warm way rather than depressing in a negative way."
  • This was also included on the compilation albums Hits (1998) and Love Songs: A Compilation... Old and New (2004).
  • The music video, directed by Jim Yukich, finds Collins playing piano at a bar in London (owned by Virgin Records founder Richard Branson).
  • This was featured in the 1986 Martin Scorsese drama The Color of Money, starring Tom Cruise and Paul Newman.

  • FaeThis is his best for me...the longing in every note. What is more poignant than love escaping through your fingers?
  • Scorpio from PhoenixIn concert, I heard Mr. Collins explain that this song is NOT about trying to get an old lover back. Instead, it's a fella after a not so great first date, attempting to get "one more night" or really, one more date to "prove that he could be the guy.". And at the very least, to redeem himself for an unexcptionable first date.
  • 007 Mayor from Nigeria This is a song that calms my nerves whenever I play it. This is the song that made me to love Phil Collins. Even after his lifetime, this particular song will remain evergreen in my memory
  • Kenny from Cleveland, OhioBeautiful song! The Jacksons song he was thinking of is "One More Chance" from their "Victory" album. That song was incredibly not released as a single.
  • Ademola Adebisi from Sangoota, nigeriaGreat evergreen song
  • Siahara Shyne Carter from United StatesI don't really care about the meaning of this song ;) but His voice is beautiful.*o*
  • Af from ArgentinaI like to think he is sited beside a hospital bed, with a loved one in his/her's last hours, begging for a little more time together.
