This was written by Stephen Bishop, who first recorded it on his debut album Careless, which contains the hits "On and On" and "Save It For A Rainy Day." Phoebe Snow heard Bishop's version and used it as the title track of her 1977 album.
According to Bishop, this song was not based on personal experience. He explains his songwriting process: "I like writing from titles. If I get a good title, it's like the pathway to the song - inspiration doesn't always work for writing a song. I can work on something and the next day I'll go, 'What?' But usually my instincts carry me through."
