Songfacts®:

  • This was written by Stephen Bishop, who first recorded it on his debut album Careless, which contains the hits "On and On" and "Save It For A Rainy Day." Phoebe Snow heard Bishop's version and used it as the title track of her 1977 album.
  • According to Bishop, this song was not based on personal experience. He explains his songwriting process: "I like writing from titles. If I get a good title, it's like the pathway to the song - inspiration doesn't always work for writing a song. I can work on something and the next day I'll go, 'What?' But usually my instincts carry me through."
  • Bishop originally wrote this song for Bette Midler. (Thanks to Stephen for the info. Check out his website at stephenbishop.com.)
