Songfacts®:

  • "Illegal," the opening track of PinkPantheress's second mixtape, Fancy That, is two and a half minutes of garage-flecked, jungle-laced introspection where she sings about a clandestine relationship or some other activity that feels thrilling yet morally ambiguous.

"To me it's about buying drugs," she explained to Capital Radio. "It's actually so interesting, because it can be taken as a few different things. At first, it was actually about using a male escort. And then I was like, 'This is a bit ridiculous, because I've never done that.' So I'm going to kind of leave it up to the listener to figure it out but it ended up being about buying weed."
  • PinkPantheress wrote the song herself and co-produced it alongside Norwegian beatmaker Aksel Arvid. Its blend of UK garage and jungle influences is characteristic of PinkPantheress's style.
  • The track samples Underworld's "Dark & Long," adding a nostalgic '90s dance element to the modern production.

"'Illegal' feels like coming home, it's garage, gritty, and takes me right back to where I started with music," said PinkPantheress. "I've always loved that raw, late-night energy, and sampling Underworld felt like the perfect way to tap into that spirit while making it my own."
  • The music video, directed by Ethan & Tom, flips between live action and animation created by Black Anime Animation Studio. It portrays a young man's infatuation with PinkPantheress, leading him into a surreal, tartan-patterned world. The clip complements the song's dreamy, slightly surreal vibe.
  • As the opening track of Fancy That, "Illegal" sets the tone for the mixtape's exploration of complex emotional landscapes and the interplay between desire and morality.
  • "Illegal" blew up on TikTok after users latched onto its quirky opening lines:

My name is Pink, and I'm really glad to meet you
You're recommended to me by some people
    Hey, ooh, is this illegal?

The lyric sparked a viral trend where people lip-synched to the camera while reaching offscreen to shake hands with an imaginary person.
  • NME ranked "Illegal" as their #1 Song of the Year. They wrote: "Combining winking storytelling smarts, artful sampling, cheeky culture-defining quips (those opening lines!) and dance floor-filling beats, 'Illegal' showed us just how big she could go."
