Songfacts®:

  • "Got My Name Changed Back" is an uptempo honky tonker about divorce with lead vocals by Miranda Lambert. Throughout the song she celebrates reverting to her maiden name after her marriage fell apart.

Well I've got me an ex that I adored
But he got along good with a couple road whores
    Got my name changed back

Some of the song's lines fueled speculation about the background to Lambert's divorce from Blake Shelton. However her fellow Pistol Annie Angaleena Presley has also been through a marriage breakdown since the trio started the band, so they aren't necessarily about Lambert's split.
  • When the Pistol Annies debuted "Got My Name Changed Back" during Lambert's Country Music Hall of Fame residency on September 26, 2018, Angaleena Presley assured the audience that the song "has nothing to do with us and is about no one in this group." Er, sorry, Angaleena, we're not convinced.
  • The Pistol Annies are well known for tackling real issues that they've been through in their lives, with a splash of humor. When they wrote this song they saw it as a fun way of addressing the pain of a marriage split. Lambert told ABC Radio it was a way of "reclaiming your humor after you've been so sad, heartbroken and all the things divorce is. To me it's celebrating, reclaiming a part of yourself."
  • Ashley Monroe, who married former MLB pitcher John Danks in 2013, admitted to Forbes that though she can't personality relate to the song's lyrics, she can still feel it.

"It's awful. A terrible, terrible thing," she said. "But we love to make a silver lining moment for somebody who can maybe laugh for the first time... in a long time."
