Songfacts®:

  • Of The Heart... was the first album for P.M. Dawn, and this was their breakout hit. Like De La Soul, P.M. Dawn specialized in slow, somewhat psychedelic raps that stood out from the aggressive gangsta rap that was popular at the time. Like many psychedelic songs of the '60s and '70s, the lyrics didn't always make a lot of sense, but the songs elicited a peaceful vibe. This song is about setting your memories free.
  • This samples "True" by Spandau Ballet, and it also incorporates elements of the song "Ashley's Roachclip" by The Soul Searchers, which was a beat found on many R&B/rap songs of the late '80s and early '90s. Other songs using a similar beat are "Paid In Full," "Sadeness (Part One)," "Back To Life (However Do You Want Me)" and "Close To You."
  • The line "Christina Applegate, you've gotta put me on" is a nod to the hip-hop classic "Bonita Applebum" by A Tribe Called Quest. Applegate is an actress who played Kelly Bundy on the TV show Married With Children. >>>

  • In the second verse, the group mentions two hit songs from 1985. "Careless whisper from a careless man" refers to "Careless Whisper" by Wham!, and "A neutron dance for a neutron fan" makes reference to "Neutron Dance" by The Pointer Sisters.
  • In the video, Tony Hadley (the lead singer of Spandau Ballet) is seen falling into a pool wearing the suit seen in the "True" video. >>>

  • Backstreet Boys covered this on their second album, Backstreet's Back.
