Songfacts®:

  • This R&B-influenced dance-pop tune is the debut single from Pink. Born Alecia Moore, the Pennsylvania native was previously a member of the R&B girl group Choice, whose song "Key To My Heart" featured on the soundtrack to the 1996 movie Kazaam. Soon after the trio landed a record deal with LaFace Records, Moore's powerhouse vocals impressed the label's co-founder L.A. Reid and he offered her a solo contract. Changing her name to Pink after Steve Buscemi's character in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs, the singer released her debut album, Can't Take Me Home, in 2000.
  • Pink co-wrote this song, which finds her dealing with an ex-boyfriend who refuses to let her move on, with Kevin "She'kspere" Briggs and Kandi Burruss. Briggs, who produced the track, and Burruss also worked together on the TLC hit "No Scrubs." Pink told interviewer Lindzi Scharf: "When I wrote that, I was really angry at someone that I'm probably still angry with. I don't write love songs because I'm not in love. So I basically write about experiences that I've had or stuff that's embarrassed me or even something that gets on my nerves. Basically, writing is my vent. So, 'There You Go' was like that. I'd always wanted to have the upper hand in that relationship and the only way I could have that was through the song."
  • Although Pink contributed lyrics to the album, she didn't have much influence over her debut. "With Can't Take Me Home, I wasn't really in full control. It was really left up to the producers and my record company," she told The Honolulu Advertiser in 2002. "I was in a bad relationship and had an attitude, so that's what most of the songs were about." Not wanting to repeat the experience on her next album, Pink demanded more control over her career or else she would walk away. As a result, she reintroduced herself as a pop-rock singer on her breakthrough, Missundaztood.
  • The music video was directed by Dave Meyers, who went on to helm many of the singer's clips. Despite her proclamations that she wants nothing to do with her ex, Pink begrudgingly agrees to give him a ride - until she actually gets to his apartment and launches her motorcycle through his window. In 2019, Pink told Billboard she smoked so much weed during the shoot, she nearly crashed he bike several times and could barely keep her eyes open for the close-up beauty shots.
