Songfacts®:

  • In this song, Pink sings from the perspective of a girl who is at a bar, having a good time until a guy comes on to her and puts his hands on her. Bad move: Pink isn't looking for a guy who sees her as his entertainment for the evening, and she doesn't want him to buy her a drink. She makes it very clear that all he'll be going home with this night is his hand.
  • This was prominently featured on the Syfy series 12 Monkeys in the 2018 episode "Die Glocke." When the time-travel team goes back to the 1940s to steal an artifact at a Nazi gala, Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire) distracts the Nazis with her performance of this song.
  • Pink is one of the few pop stars who wasn't a big Prince fan, but she used his naming convention on this track, making it "U And Ur Hand" instead of "You And Your Hand."
  • Pink wrote this with Max Martin and Dr. Luke, who also co-wrote/co-produced her previous single, "Who Knew." So how did Pink, who once lamented she was "tired of being compared to damn Britney Spears" on "Don't Let Me Get Me," end up working with Martin, the Swedish pop master who helped launch Spears' career? She told The Irish Times: "I think you have to be open-minded about these things. I don't sell my records out of a car boot. The labels now go on about what researches well and all that stuff. I certainly wasn't going to do a Britney-style song, but Max Martin is an ex-punk rocker. He produced the song 'U And Ur Hand' on the album and the label loved it and wanted it as the single. That's when the 'discussions' started. To cut a long story, we ended up shooting a video for 'U And Ur Hand' and one for 'Stupid Girls' and they had to pick one. Guess who won?" That would be "Stupid Girls," which was considered a safer choice compared to the racy alternative, but this track ended up being released as the album's third single.
  • The producers of American Idol thought a song that references masturbation was too hot to handle and asked Pink to rewrite it as "U And Ur Heart" for her appearance on the show. Pink recalled her reaction in a radio interview with Australia's The Kyle And Jackie O Show, saying, "You want me to rewrite my song for you. For American f---ing Idol? What does that even mean, how do you have sex with your heart?" She ended up singing "Who Knew."
  • Pink's longtime director Dave Meyers helmed the music video, which casts Pink as the tough but glamorous Lady Delish, a woman on the prowl for a quality man. In a garage, we learn she appreciates cars more than guys, because cars are more reliable. She works out her frustrations in the gym on a punching bag with a man drawn on it before heading to various locales, including a tea garden, a rooftop bar, and the gala where she meets and rejects "Daddy Dick." Delish returns home alone and lounges on her bed, where she boxes up a package of Vaseline to send him (and his hand).
  • Pink adopted several different looks for the video, which were time consuming to put together. "It was four hours of makeup and one hour of shooting for every different look in the video," she told MTV. "I'll never do it again, so enjoy it! Because it sucked." One particular style that was challenging was her lacy body covering in the bedroom sequence. Pieces of the black lace were carefully trimmed and pasted all over her body. The precision was necessary when handling the expensive fabric, which was imported from France and cost about $300 per yard.
  • This was used on the TV show Friday Night Lights in the 2007 episode "Blinders."
  • Pink released I'm Not Dead, her fourth studio album, three years after its punk-inspired predecessor, Try This. That album failed to meet commercial expectations, selling around 719,000 copies, and it seemed like I'm Not Dead was going to follow suit until "U And Ur Hand" broke through and boosted album sales. It eventually earned a double-Platinum certification in the US for 2 million copies sold.

  • Ian Chirnside from AustraliaThe Veronicas “4ever” from 2005 sounds almost identical to Pink’s “U and Ur Hand”, unsurprisingly because Max Martin and Lukasz (Dr Luke) Gottwald wrote both songs!
Was just listening to the radio thinking it was the Pink song, but it turned out to be The Veronicas!
  • Lina from Musanze, Rwanda This song is freaking amazing!! To all the men out there: if a woman isn’t reciprocating your moves, she is not interested. Let it go and move on. It is annoying when you keep after someone after they show a clear lack of interest in you. I would also like to note that this doesn’t really happen to guys. Women don’t keep after a man if he says he isn’t interested. We women know our boundaries. It’s time for you men to learn yours. I think the music video for this song is amazing as well. I don’t think the fact that she is wearing revealing clothing contradicts or takes away from the point she is trying to make: women are not objects. We are not to be used to have sex with. When she wears revealing clothing, she is trying to say that she gets to choose what she wears. Just because someone shows a little more skin than you might be used to does not mean they are in any way asking or inviting you to make a move on them. And personally, I don’t see why we don’t bother men about this either. In schools with dress codes, most of the restrictions are placed on the women. I should know, my school has a dress code. They say the reason all these restrictions are placed on us is so we don’t distract the boys by having a body. Couldn’t you also make the same argument the other way around? Why can’t we as girls and women be distracted by men’s bodies? Dress codes are just another way to restrict women and strip them of their lower. Anyway, by dressing in revealing clothing, Pink is making a statement about how women are treated in terms of what clothing we wear and how the world around us reacts to this decision. So, men, do us a favor and keep those eyes up.
  • Brady from New Prague, MnI have to agree with Angela. In most cases in life, you can't always be a goody two shoes or else you will never get your way. I'm not a girl, so this song doesn't really relate to me directly, but sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself, even if it means playing rough to get your point across.
  • Angela from Auckland, New ZealandI love this song, and Pink's attitude. I have to disagree with Blake's comments, I take exception to being told that I will get bashed up if I tell a guy to f**k off if he bothers me in a club. My immediate instinct if a guy touches my ass in a club, and they have done, is to slap him hard across the face. I have never been bashed up for retaliating the unwarranted touch, nor for telling a guy to f**k off. So thanks for your 'concern' Blake, but I'm not a little girl who needs to go and tell the teacher or a big strong man when I need some help, I am very capable of taking care of things myself!
  • Blake from London, United KingdomPink admitted to loving the Australian beer VB (Victoria Bitter).
  • Cristina from Madrid, SpainI agree with Blake... I think he explained this song very well...
  • Blake from London, United KingdomI think that the meaning of the song is very good, in the way that it says that girls are not 'objects' or 'playthings' to be used by boys, as this ever changing society suggests and that girls can have the strength to stand up for themselves if they don't want to be touched. Also, I think that you shouldn't be touching anyone or having sex if your not married but that's beside the point. If you want me to expand upon this please reply. However I do think that the swearing is a bit unnecessary and I highly recommend that if a guy approaches you like that and you feel uncomfortable, don't say the stuff Pink does in her song, its likely to get you bashed up, or worse... Just get help from someone in charge or something...don't try to pick a fight, trust me, you wouldn't want to.
  • Trina from Nyc, NyThis song rocks! I love grrl power songs, and this one is one of the best. The music video also rocks. I love how they did it like a book, and that she's acting it out. The only thing that bothers me is that the song's message is that girls aren't sex objects to be used at guys' leisure, except in the music video, Pink is dressed in very revealing clothes...so it's kinda contradictory. Otherwise, it's great!
  • Madalyn from Greensburg, Pathis song is another good way to say "go f**k yourself. literally
  • Michaela from Brooklyn, NyI love this song!love her bad attitude in this song!Telling the boy to back down!Yeay. This song to me is funny too when I listen to it.I love it when she said,"Don't touch, back up I'm not the one, uh buh-bye!" and,"You can say what you want to your boyfriends, just let me have my fun tonight,a'ight!"-love that!
  • Vicky from Larissa, GreeceI agree with u Kristin.. or we can say that she tells him: get stuffed.. or in French: va te faire foutre...
  • Rcaseyh from Roselle Park, NjA few corrections ...
I believe it ... SIX shots, not SINK shots.
Also, it's ... "Keep your DRINK", not DREAM.

PS -- the song is not "ABOUT masturbation". It's about having self-confidence when someone needs to be put in their place. In this case a guy is trying 'objectify' her into being his plaything for the evening. The message of the song is an attempt to pound into the heads of many guys (particularly when in a bar), a woman can be out for the evening to just enjoy herself without the need to serve as someone else's "entertainment". Ultimately she tells him where he can 'get off' (no pun intended). Masturbation isn't the main message of the song, it's incidental.
  • Mike from Santa Barbara, CaAnyone who doesn't know what this song is saying has never been turned down by a girl in a bar before.
  • Sierra from Sactown, Cai think that that guy will have nothing in his hand at the end of the night
  • Emma from Dorset, Vtokay this is definitely about masturbating..im sorry to all of you who thought it was deep or w/e but it is. and yeah the title is U + Ur Hand..
  • Kristin from Erie, PaOkay, this song is about masturbation. "I'm not here for your entertainment, you don't really wanna mess with me tonight." in other words, she won't do it with him. "..it's just YOU and YOUR HAND tonight." in other words, she's telling him to go masturbate with himself
  • Amanda from Wabash, InI love Pink and I think it is great that she tells the guy that he has a hand and to use it.
