Songfacts®:

  • Poco's Jimmy Messina wrote this country-rock song about a girl who couldn't seem to make up her mind between choosing him or another guy she was seeing. "I was smitten with her and she had a boyfriend, but she was in and out with him. Then again, she was in and out with me, too," he told Vinyl Dialogues in 2020. "I was kind of going through a little bit of an abandonment issue there with her. The song came out of wanting her to care for me and be with me. It was a little bit of a love song, but also a little bit of angst and frustration about somebody not wanting to necessarily be with me."
  • One of the band's signature songs, this is the only single from their second, self-titled album.
  • Poco is the band's first album to feature Timothy B. Schmit, who replaced Randy Meisner on bass (a feat he repeated when he joined the Eagles in 1977 after Meisner's departure).
  • A few months after the album's release in 1970, Messina quit the band and went on to form the popular duo Loggins & Messina with Kenny Loggins. They released their first album, Sittin' In, in 1971.
