Songfacts®:

  • In this song, a heartbroken Leigh Kakaty wonders how he can go on living without his girl. It's a very emotional song, but he wrote it to get on the radio. Pop Evil had been playing for years in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area and were ready for the next step. Their music tends to more hard rock (the "Evil"), but this one is mellowed out (the "Pop").

Released as a single, the song succeeded in getting them airplay on the local radio station WGRD in 2007, which meant they could make more money at their gigs and fund more recording. A year later, they released their debut album (with the song included) on their album Lipstick On The Mirror, released independently. Word got out, and they landed a major label deal soon after.
  • "Somebody Like You" was written by band members Dave Gracia, Dylan Allison and Leigh Kakaty, and produced by Kid Rock associates Al Sutton and Marlon Young at Mackinaw Harvest Music studios in Grand Rapids.
  • The music video was directed by Jason Honeycutt and stars Britt Koth and Rossi Morreale as a couple who meet their doom. Koth was a big name: she was starring in the show 8th & Ocean on MTV. They had to scrimp for funding to get her, and then the video was shot in one day on the cheap.

"I found some investors that were really excited about the project and all they wanted in return was to be involved," Leigh Kakaty explained on the Songfacts Podcast. "So they had a bit of extra money and they were really interested in kind of giving us the launch. We had Brit Koth, who used to be the star of the 8th & Ocean show on MTV - my brother locked that down. Unfortunately, we took a gamble on that show being the biggest thing on MTV. We originally wanted Lauren [Conrad] from Laguna Beach, that show from MTV, but we thought 8th & Ocean was going to be the bigger one. So that was our first fail. But the video still turned out rad."
