Songfacts®:

  • A person's "demeanor" is their outward behavior or bearing. For instance, someone with a friendly demeanor will be approachable, kind, and might smile a lot while talking to you.

During this song's chorus, Pop Smoke expresses his excitement that a girl likes the way he conducts himself and thinks she'll want to have oral sex with him.
  • Pop Smoke spits on his verse about his poverty-stricken upbringing and the expensive shoes and jewelry he can now afford.

Pop originally recorded his verse for Exodus, DMX' first posthumous album. Producer Swizz Beatz made the beat for the Brooklyn rapper after he asked for something that sounded like DMX. However, Republic Records made the choice to put this verse onto "Demeanor" instead so that the song would be more complete for a single release. Moneybagg Yo replaced Pop Smoke on "Money Money Money."
  • Dua Lipa delivers a short verse followed by a bridge where she flirts with Pop. She's ready to get intimate with him, but warns, "My demeanor is meaner than yours."
  • This is the lead single from Pop Smoke's second posthumous album, Faith. A week before its release, Lipa teased her feature with the late star by sharing a video of Smoke vibing to her Calvin Harris collaboration, "One Kiss," in his car. She added a caption containing one of her lyrics in the bridge, "YOU CAN'T SAY POP WITHOUT SMOKE," along with the album's release date. The lyric she quoted refers to Pop's line on the Jackboys' song "Gatti," where he said:

Look, you cannot say Pop and forget the Smoke
  • Pop Smoke envisaged Bruno Mars on the song in an early Instagram preview, saying, "If we get Bruno Mars on this, it's over!"
  • Pop Smoke and Dua Lipa wrote the disco-influenced song alongside Daniel Mlzrahi and the track's producers, Dru Decaro, Mantra, and Michael Gomes. Mantra (Future's "Selfish" and "Fresh Air") also played the bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and percussion on the track.
  • Directed by Nabil Elderkin (Billie Eilish, Arctic Monkeys, Kendrick Lamar), the lavish "Demeanor" video portrays a renaissance castle banquet. Dua Lipa stars in the clip, while Pop Smoke is represented in a painting immortalizing him as a Roman emperor.
