Songfacts®:

  • This Homer Banks and Lester Snell-penned song was originally recorded by Pops Staples in 1999, shortly before his death. The track didn't find its way onto a record until it was included on his 2015 posthumous album Don't Lose This.
  • Songwriter and producer Homer Banks penned several of the Staple Singers' biggest hits, including their first Stax single "Long Walk To DC", and "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)". Keyboardist Lester Snell also performed on many Stax classic numbers. In the 1980s, Banks and Snell formed the Two's Company recording company, which released albums by J. Blackfoot and Ann Hines.
  • Chris Stapleton covered the song for his From A Room: Volume 2 album after being introduced to it by producer Dave Cobb.

"I love the message of ('Friendship')," Stapleton told Taste of Country. "Much like the 'Millionaire' song, I just like what it says and it's said in a way. If you're hanging out with your friend or you've got a longtime friend, it's a good thing. I've never heard a song about friendship quite like that. I know I didn't write it, but it's probably my favorite song on the record."
