  • The alt-rock phoenix Porno For Pyros rose from the ashes of Jane's Addiction following their first breakup. The band released two studio albums, Porno for Pyros (1993) and Good God's Urge (1996), before going on hiatus in 1998. They came together for a virtual reunion on YouTube's Lolla2020 amid the pandemic, sparking a full-fledged comeback.

"Fingernail" completes a trio of songs the band originally wrote in the 1990s but only recorded in 2023. It follows "Little Me" and "Agua" – the latter being their first new track in 26 years. They even snuck in a heartfelt tribute, "Pete's Dad," for guitarist Peter DiStefano's father.
  • "Fingernail" is a contemplative ballad. DiStefano describes it to Songfacts as "a song about healing," a reflection on the slow, steady process of mending a broken heart. "It takes the speed of a fingernail to heal," he mused, referencing the time it takes for a fingernail to grow back whole. "If you marked your fingernail at the bottom of it, by the time it gets to the tip of your finger, that's usually how long it takes to heal over anything physically, emotionally, mentally, so we believe in that."
  • Originally intended for their 2023 reunion concerts, "Fingernail" instead accompanied a rebranded farewell tour in 2024. It stands as the band's final song.

Bassist Martyn LeNoble, who opted out of the final tour, pondered: "In 'Fingernail,' I hear our lives, and yours. Decades of growing... happiness, heartbreak... growing pains."

He marvels at the song's journey, taking nearly 30 years to fully blossom, and applauds the way it closes the chapter. "The way the song ends," LeNoble reflected. "I love redemption songs. I'd say we ended it well Perry, Peter and Stephen."
