Songfacts®:

  • Porter Robinson is an American Electronic Dance music producer and DJ from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, who first came to many people's attention in 2011 when he provided tour support to Tiësto and Skrillex. He signed the same year with Skrillex's label OWSLA, and released his debut EP, Spitfire, which reached the #1 spot on the iTunes Dance chart staying there for 2 weeks. This song was released on April 10, 2012 through Big Beat Records in North America, and Ministry Of Sound everywhere else. It became Robinson's first mainstream hit in the UK, when it debuted at #9 on the chart dated August 19, 2012.
  • The song features uncredited guest vocals from the South Carolina bred singer-songwriter Heather Bright, whose other vocal contributions include "Don't Blame the Party (Mode)," which was a minor hit for Dutch dance duo Bingo Players. However, it is as a songwriter Bright is best known for; her credits include Justin Bieber's hit "Somebody To Love" and Karmin's debut single, "Crash Your Party."
  • Robinson was still living in his parents' house when he wrote this song. His studio was in the same bedroom that he'd had since a kid. He recalled to Q magazine, February 2013, "It was last Christmas. I remember I came up with the riff right as my parents were asking me to take down the Christmas ornaments and put them back in the attic."
  • Robinson recalled the story of the song during a Reddit AMA: "The truth is that I knew I had something special with 'Language' when I first wrote that riff," he said. "I couldn't even produce because I was so fixated on listening to it over and over. I think producers know the feeling. and then i wrote the piano melody that comes in after the riff and I was like 'hooOOo boy.' I was really happy."
