Songfacts®:

  • "Better Now" finds Post Malone reminiscing on a past relationship.

You probably think that you are better now, better now
You only say that 'cause I'm not around, not around
You know I never meant to let you down, let you down
Woulda gave you anything, woulda gave you everything
You know I say that I am better now, better now
I only say that 'cause you're not around, not around

Post is sorry that he let his former girlfriend down, but he feels they are both disguising the fact that they still have feelings for each other.
  • It is likely that "Better Now" is about the same ex that Post Malone sang about on "I Fall Apart." The bad breakup on that tune is one that he experienced at his Texan high school.
  • Malone wrote the song with Canadian singer-songwriter Billy Walsh, vocal engineer Louis Bell, and Frank Dukes, who has also worked with Drake, the Weeknd and Camila Cabello. Production was handled by the latter two. Frank Dukes told Pitchfork he and Louis Bell spliced the verse melody of one song with the chorus of another. Dukes then added an entirely new backing track on guitar: "I had been listening to a lot of old Weezer, and you can hear that in the chord progression," he said.
