Songfacts®:

  • This trap-pop banger finds Post Malone and Future lamenting deceitful women. They both air dirty laundry about lovers who it turned out were uncommitted to their relationships.

Said you'd take a bullet, told me you would die for me
I had a really bad feeling you'd been lying to me
We were on the low, but you were getting high with me
  • Halsey croons the bridge, where she gives her perspective on an unfaithful male lover.

I came around, I figured out, should follow my gut
I don't play anymore, I went through your phone
And called the girls in your DMs and took all them home

During her verse, Halsey gives several clues that she is referencing her relationship with the rapper G-Eazy.

I sold 15 million copies of a breakup note

Halsey's 2018 single "Without Me" finds her detailing the end of her romance with G-Eazy. The song was a worldwide hit, topping the Billboard Hot 100.

And you don't have to say I'm crazy
'Cause I know nothing's changed though

This may be a reference to "Him & I," Halsey's romantic duet with G-Eazy. During that song's first verse, the Bay Area rapper says of the New Jersey songstress:

Crazy, but I love her. I could never run from her
  • Malone has previously collaborated with Future on one previous occasion: the Atlanta rapper supplied a verse for the official "Congratulations" remix. Malone and Halsey have never worked together before.
  • The song was produced by regular Post Malone collaborators Andrew Watt and Louis Bell. Watt is also Malone's touring guitarist.

The third producer was Happy Perez, who has contributed to several of Halsey's songs, including "Now Or Never ," "Eyes Closed" and "Nightmare."
  • Speaking in an interview with his friend Kerwin Frost, Malone recalled Louis Bell playing him "Die For Me" long before they recorded it. "Lou played it to me a long time ago, and I was just like touring and s--t, so I was like not really in album mode necessarily," he said.

Post added that when Bell played the instrumentation to him again towards the end of making the record, the singer/rapper recognized it as a potential hit. "Halsey did a verse and then it all came together like magic," he added.
  • Halsey recorded a demo of "Die For Me" with just her on it. She performed her verse throughout her summer 2022 tour, and since so many people asked for it, she recorded her full solo version as "Die 4 Me." Produced by Andrew Watt, Louis Bell, Happy Perez, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, and Brandon Buttner, Halsey released "Die For Me" on February 24, 2023.
