Songfacts®:

  • This heartfelt song about a bad breakup was produced by frequent The Weeknd collaborator Illangelo and appeared as the seventh track on Post Malone's debut album Stoney, which was released in December 2016.
  • Ten months after Stoney was dropped, a stripped down live performance of "I Fall Apart" posted by Twitter user rosesdua and later shared by the Facebook page Youngcerati went viral on social media, giving the song fresh legs. Sales for the song sent it into the top 20 on iTunes.

Noting how new fans were reacting to the discovery of the tune, Post Malone and Republic Records decided to make the track an official single. This was an unusual move as "Rockstar", released in promotion of the artist's sophomore album Beerbongs & Bentleys, was already in the upper regions of the Hot 100.
  • The song dates back to Post Malone's days at Grapevine High School in Texas. He recalled to GQ: "You know, I wrote this song about when I was a little naive high school boy, so this is about a high school shorty that we won't disclose, but she's a real McA--hole."
