  • The theme of this song is the old adage that money can't buy you happiness. Post Malone's girl has left him leaving the Texan alone and dejected in his luxurious large home.

Ooh, covered in carats, ooh, mahogany cabinets
Ooh, I ball like the Mavericks, ooh, stable and stallions
Ooh, massive medallions, ooh, I finally had it
Ooh, but then you just vanished, damn, I thought I was savage

"Rich & Sad" may have been written during the short time that Post and his girlfriend, Ashlen Nicole Diaz, had separated.
  • The song was produced by Toronto native Frank Dukes, who has also worked with the likes of Drake ("0 to 100/ The Catch Up"), Rihanna ("Needed Me") and Camila Cabello ("Havana"). He co-produced two other Beerbongs & Bentleys tracks, "Spoil My Night" and "Better Now."
  • The song's chorus came together after Frank Dukes played Post the beat and suggested to him that he come up with some lyrics about being unsatisfied with fame. "So Post went in and freestyled half of the hook - 'I just wish the money made you stay' and 'I got a million big faces but I'm still alone,'" he recalled to Pitchfork. "That melody was totally Post, just one take all the way through. He is a mellow guy, but there's an intensity when he makes music—he knows what he is going for, and what he's doing."
