Songfacts®:

  • Prayers is the duo of Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley. They formed in 2013 and by 2014 had refined their mix of mendacious electro/rock-hip/hop to the point where it earned them a slot as opening act for The Cult.

Parley came up with the music for the track, and Reyes did the lyrics, which came after a falling out with his daughter.

"'Young Gods' is about my life falling apart," he said in his Songfacts interview. "It's just me trying to communicate with the people that hurt me. I knew that there was no way that I could get in the same room with these people, but I knew that one day they would listen to my music, and when they did, that was the way I could communicate to them how they hurt me."
  • Travis Barker of blink-182 produced the Young Gods album and also played on this track.
  • The video portrays a fight on the streets of San Diego between gangs led by Rafael Reyes and Dave Parley. In February 2015 they put out a call on Facebook looking for guys to participate. As expected, real gang members showed up from the Sherman Grant Hill neighborhood, and in the rumble, the punches are very real.

Reyes and Parley mixed it up, and had the buises to prove it. "A lot of us including me got hurt," Reyes wrote on Facebook. "We are not actors so we had to fight for reals."

Travis Barker shows up at the end of the clip to bail Reyes out of jail. Gavin Filpiak directed it.
